Many language products measure activity exceptionally well. They can count lessons, streaks, points, and repeated answers. Those measures do not necessarily describe whether a person can understand another human being when the moment is unscripted and consequential.
HelloStranger starts elsewhere. A situation unfolds. Someone speaks. The learner wants something, lacks something, or needs to respond. Language becomes the means of continuing rather than the subject displayed on the screen.
This is game design in service of learning, not gamification placed around exercises. Context, curiosity, consequence, and progressive understanding should produce engagement from inside the experience.
